Brentwood Essex residential development new build, conversion and refurb. Millfield Former 20 acre estate head offices of Martin McColls newsagents and convenience stores.

Due to start in spring 2021, we will be creating high quality new homes consisting of houses, one and two bedroom apartments. Work started at the end of 2020 on “Millfield” the Refurbishment of the 1882 country house. This was the year that the historic Epping Forest was dedicated to the people by Queen Victoria . This large site was the former head offices of Martin the newsagent PLC. Set in 20 acres of prime Essex countryside and only a short walk from Brentwood Town Centre.

In this post we are going to give you a brief history of the old house and the rest of the site. Also a CGI image that our team of architects have created hopefully giving an idea of our vision for the final result. It is a very exciting build for us which we have split into two phases.

A brief history of Millfield (Martin House) Brentwood.

Millfield’s first owner was Charles William Matthews who resided here in 1886. A local resident has said that in 1937 Herman Goering, Air Marshall of The German Luftwaffe spent some time in the house. Between 1939 -1945 the outbuildings were used by the army as a cookhouse serving Anti-aircraft Gun Units for the nearby Weald Park. During World War II over 1000 bombs were dropped on Brentwood. Over 5000 houses were destroyed, 389 people were injured and 43 died.

In the corner of what is now a large car park is the original Well. This would have provided the water supply to the house. The first floor of the house itself had 8 bedrooms , three bathrooms, a dressing room and a sitting room for the family. On the second floor theres six further bedrooms used for staff. At the entrance is the gatehouse which was also staff accommodation. Currently the staff restaurant stands on top of what was the Old Orchard.

We are preserving the beautiful 6 foot Austrian Strass Crystal Chandelier which has pride of place in the entrance area. Also the bell used originally to call the staff to the house. A stone carved sundial at the side entrance which lead to the ornamental pond and rose garden. The gable at the front features garlands of fruit and flowers on either side of a carved greek goddess. This is all currently undergoing professional stone cleaning.

Millfield will be converted into 10 exceptional apartments. Our sales team Just New Homes will launch in Spring 2022.
